Three ranch geldings are taking an afternoon nap on a sunny day in eastern Montana! To the left is a appaloosa leopard buckskin, the center is a red dun quarter horse and to the right is a dark sorrel quarter horse. While horses can sleep lying down, many people don't realize that they often sleep standing up. Since they are animals of prey, their instinct is to be ready for fight or flight if need be and they are better equipped to do that standing up. These three look pretty relaxed for snooze time. Their lower lips hanging a little, their ears slightly back and a cocked hind leg are all signs that they are enjoying their nap.

My husband and I raise appaloosa horses and angus cattle on the Plains of Eastern Montana.
